Positive Initiatives
PRIDE Badges
We have a big focus on our school values of P.R.I.D.E. (perseverance, respect, integrity, diversity, excellence) and each week in assembly, there are badges awarded to students displaying these values. The badges are to be worn on the school uniform.
Waka Points
Each student in the school is assigned to a waka, either Takitimu, Aotea, Tainui or Tokomaru. Each student can work towards earning points for their waka by actively participating in whole school activities e.g. athletics, fitness and cultural events. Each week the waka points are tallied up and the winning waka is announced at assembly. At the end of the term, the waka with the most points will be rewarded with a longer lunch than normal.
Card System
Green: Students are given a green card when they arrive at Longford in Year 7. They hold on to this card and at the beginning of Term 2, when staff bring names to staff meeting and we discuss together whether or not we think that these students are ready to move to their silver card. We review this at the beginning of each term.
Silver: This card gives students privileges, as decided by classroom teachers and staff. It has been decided that as Year 7 student can apply for a gold card in Term 4 and Year 8 students are able to apply for their gold card after they have been on their silver card for a good amount of time. They can be nominated by a teacher, peer or they can nominate themselves. The nomination forms are available from the office.
Gold: When a student is on a gold card it gives them access to the additional privileges, such as an early lunch time every now and then.
Excellence Badge: Year 8 students who have displayed excellent behaviour for their whole time at Longford will be awarded an excellence badge. This is selected by the whole staff and the students are rewarded with a day of fun.
Blues awards
Sporting, Cultural and Academic Blues are awarded twice yearly for excellence in these areas. Students who have been outstanding in their chosen field are invited to apply for a Blues Award. There is set criteria for the students to follow and it is explained to them thoroughly.
The Longford Intermediate Blues scheme provides students with the challenge to make the most of opportunities and to be recognised for these achievements. We want to instill pride in achievement, promoting our vision - “Longford students are: Proud, respectful young people prepared for the future!”
